Much like the parable of the three servants in the Bible, we can be categorized into three distinct groups: Avoiders, Confronters, and Investors. Each approach has its own characteristics, strategies, and implications for our overall health and happiness.

In the Bible, there's a powerful story about a master who entrusts his wealth to three servants.

The parable of the three servants is a powerful metaphor that can be applied to our approach to health. Just as the master entrusted his wealth to his servants, we have been entrusted with the responsibility of managing our own health and well-being. How we choose to approach this task can have a profound impact on our lives.

Avoider approach: characteristics and strategies

The Avoidant person chooses not to care for their health. They may have doubts, poor experiences with health, or believe wellness is unattainable for them. These people often victimize themselves, identify with their diagnoses, never change their habits, and live dependent on pharmaceuticals, never achieving true healing. They may ignore symptoms, delay seeking medical attention, or engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms to avoid dealing with the underlying problems. Avoiders often feel overwhelmed by the prospect of making significant lifestyle changes or facing the challenges of their health.

Avoiders may exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Reluctance to schedule regular check-ups or screenings

  • Tendency to dismiss or minimize health concerns

  • Reliance on quick fixes or temporary solutions

  • Difficulty making long-term commitments to healthy habits

  • Avoidance of difficult conversations with healthcare providers


Avoidance is the underlying belief that we cannot control our health and/or there's no point in making the effort, as it's too hard to keep up with. You might hear them say things like, "I'm here for a good time, not a long time," "I'm too busy," or "I got dealt bad genes."

Strategies for Avoiders:

  1. Acknowledge the importance of preventive care and regular check-ups.

  2. Develop a support system to hold you accountable and encourage proactive health management.

  3. Prioritize self-care and make small, sustainable changes to your lifestyle.

Confronter approach: characteristics and strategies

Confronters are individuals who tend to take a more aggressive or combative approach to their health. They may be quick to seek medical intervention, but often struggle to maintain long-term lifestyle changes or adhere to treatment plans. Confronters may feel a sense of control or empowerment when they can "fight" their health issues, but this approach can sometimes lead to burnout or frustration.

The person who idolizes health bases every decision on how it will impact their wellness. They demand full control and place "health" above everything else. These people often run into burnout or "miss the forest for the trees," eventually abandoning their health practices because of the unsustainability and lack of results.

Confronters may exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Tendency to seek immediate solutions or "quick fixes"

  • Difficulty with long-term commitment to lifestyle changes

  • Reliance on external interventions (e.g., medications, surgeries)

  • Resistance to making gradual, incremental changes

Idolatry is the underlying belief that unless they do this, they will get sick, which scares them. You might hear them say things like, "I can't go a day without my supplements," "I can't come over for dinner," or "I need to go burn off that meal."

Investor approach: characteristics and strategies

The person who cares for their body in respect to our Creator and the Spirit who lives in us, but also accepts God's will over our health. Health is important, but not a priority. These people achieve sustainable health and are able to maintain faith in their healing throughout trials and seasons of change. They consciously choose to make healthy, godly decisions.

Investors may exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Commitment to regular check-ups, screenings, and preventive care

  • Willingness to make gradual, sustainable lifestyle changes

  • Curiosity about the latest research and advancements in healthcare

  • Openness to exploring alternative or complementary therapies

  • Ability to adapt and adjust their health strategies as needed

Stewardship is the underlying belief that they steward their health so that they may fulfill their calling well and live under God's blessings. You might hear them say things like, "I prepare nourishing foods at home, but I also go out to dinner for fellowship," "I am healed," or "I am a temple for the Holy Spirit."
